Hello Everyone. I am a BSN student in UNM’s College of Nursing. As President of the HSSC for 2026-2027, I hope to initiate and execute projects that improve the experience of getting to and being on North Campus. I also want to facilitate more interprofessional and social opportunities for students while carrying the torch of previous council initiatives like the food pantry, the monthly Speaker Series, UNM Day and community outreach. Together with my fellow HSSC officers, I am excited to serve UNM’s Health Science community.
Prior to nursing school, I studied Cultural Anthropology at Macalester College where I also played quarterback on the football team. Since that time, I managed lodging facilities for rock climbers and found a love for community theatre before my dive into nursing. Academic and professional interests include critical care and anesthesia. Beyond the books, I enjoy specialty coffee, train calisthenics, rock climb, and ride bikes.

Hello all, I am honored to serve as Vice President of the HSSC for 2026–2027 while continuing my journey as a Level 3 BSN student in UNM’s College of Nursing. I am grateful for the opportunity to support students across UNM’s Health Sciences community and hope to help create a welcoming environment where students feel connected, heard, and encouraged throughout their time on North Campus. I am especially excited to work alongside the HSSC officers to support meaningful initiatives such as the food pantry, Speaker Series, UNM Day, community outreach, and opportunities that bring students together both professionally and socially.
My journey in nursing has been shaped by a genuine desire to care for others and to be present for people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Throughout nursing school, I have learned how powerful compassion, teamwork, and advocacy can be in creating a positive impact for patients, families, and communities. My academic and professional interests include critical care, and I hope to work in the ICU after graduation. Outside of school, I enjoy playing basketball, writing, reading, acting, hiking, and spending time with the people who keep me grounded and inspired.

Vice President of Student Affairs, Health Sciences Student Council
HSSCVPStudentServices@salud.unm.edu
Hi there! My name is Kirsten Perea, and I am a third-year PharmD student in UNM's College of Pharmacy. As Vice President of Student Affairs for the HSSC for the 2026–2027 term, I am passionate about fostering interprofessional collaboration and building connections across the Health Sciences campus. I hope to create opportunities for students from all health professions to learn from one another, strengthen our community, and ensure student voices are heard.
What I love most about pharmacy is working with patients and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to improve their health. I enjoy helping patients better understand their medications, health conditions, and the healthcare system so they can take an active role in their care. Outside of academics, I enjoy traveling, roller skating, listening to music, and anything true crime.

I have served in the ASUNM Joint Council and have been actively involved in leadership positions with the Indian Student Association. Currently, I work as a student research assistant in Dr. O’Donnell’s Virtual Early Life Stress (VELS) - Pediatrics lab. Outside of academics, I enjoy dancing, watching movies, and going on hikes.

HSSCSecretary@salud.unm.edu
My name is Madison Otero (she/they) and I am the HSSC Secretary for the 2026-2027 term. I am a third year PhD student in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program (BSGP). As an officer of HSSC, I hope to foster greater connection between the research and healthcare sides of North Campus. Much of current healthcare is founded on research, and our research is intended to help advance healthcare, so it is important that we have forums to communicate with each other and see the whole picture.
I graduated from UNM with a BS in Biology with a concentration in Biotechnology and minors in Communications and Statistics. As an undergrad, I was the program coordinator for the Honors College Pathmakers Mentorship Program and the chair for Juniper Reimagined: A Queer and Trans Student Alliance. I also worked as a technician in the Neurosciences department before joining the BSGP. Currently, I am a part of the McCormick lab where we study the biology of aging using C. elegans. My project is using an amyloid-beta model in C. elegans to see if compounds that extend lifespan can delay the onset of neurodegenerative disease. Outside of lab, I like to crochet and watch movies and anime.

Hi, I’m Veronica Trejo, a BSN nursing student at the UNM College of Nursing. I’m excited to share that I’ll be serving as HSSC’s Treasurer for the 2026–2027 term, where I hope to support our student community with transparency, positivity, and genuine care. I come from a medical background, and my experiences in healthcare have strengthened my passion for nursing and my commitment to advocating for others. I also have experience managing funding in previous roles, which has taught me the importance of thoughtful decision making and responsible stewardship.
Outside of school, I’m a mom of three, and my family is my greatest joy. We love spending time together at the movies, enjoying extracurricular activities, or relaxing at the park. When I get a quiet moment, you’ll usually find me reading or unwinding with a good sudoku puzzle. Living in Albuquerque has been such a wonderful experience for me and my family, and I’m proud to be part of this vibrant, welcoming community.
